The River Center in Fortuna
by Susan K. Campbell
River Center, Fortuna
Fortuna has the largest (human) population concentration on the Eel River, so it only makes sense that Friends of the Eel River should have a presence here. We aim to promote an awareness of Eel River issues, including raising the publics awareness that a healthy river promotes a healthy economy, whereas a sick river is a deterrent not just to tourism, but to other businesses as well. A sick river can also pose health hazards such as the late summer algae bloom weve seen these last several years. More and more we realize that water quality for human purposes, as well as for wildlife, relies on a healthy riparian system. One needs only to read watershed guidelines put out by various agencies and scientists to see how flood control, clean and sustainable water supply, and recreational enjoyment are all intimately tied to our watersheds health. All of us want to live in a clean environment with a vibrant economy, and we want our children to enjoy the same.
Since opening in February of this year, we have had a wonderful response from Fortuna folks. We had a good turnout for our Open House and another strong showing at our Art Gallerys Grand Opening. With the help of Fortuna FOER members and a local CCC crew, we took part in the Rodeo Parade and were greeted with cheers and applause.
Within months of opening, we had requests from schools to participate with them in some way. Trinidad invited us to have a booth at their Ocean Fair, and Cuddeback Elementary School held an assembly for us to talk about the Pikeminnow and why its a problem. The City of Fortuna invited local FOER members to assist in a clean-up along the Riverwalk.
The River Center is many things, including a place of information exchange. Anyone can come here and find out about the next river kayaking trip or clean-up campaign, or to get information on the Pikeminnow problem. We are currently putting together various visual and tactile displays, including maps of kayak put-in and take-out spots, or deep fishing holes for Pikeminnow angling. Information exchange goes both ways, and the River Center is also a place where the public can come in to report trash or illegal dumping of chemicals and to share other Eel River concerns.
The River Center is also a place of gathering together, both for work and for play. After the Rodeo Parade this summer, we returned to the River Center for a BBQ and played bocce ball on the lawn.
The River Center is also an Art Gallery and Store. Artists Michael Guerriero, Jim Lowry, Yvonne and Jim Reynolds, Leon Porter and more have works of art for sale here. In addition, we have our trademark Wild & Free shirts and hats, a supply of Eel River Chocolate Rocks, fun and informational puzzles and coloring books for children, and books on various salmon and water topics for adults and young adults as well as note cards, prayer flags, and salmon votive candleholders. Think of us for gifts the next time a birthday or special occasion comes along.
We are lucky to have the support of local artists, experts, and volunteers from our Fortuna group who are helping make the Center what it is and what it will become. All in all, were happy to be here in Fortuna and we think Fortuna is equally happy to have us here.
Editors Note: Thank you to Michael Guerriero, FOER Board of Directors, for the design and fabrication of our beautiful sign.
